1 Week Old!

Everyone is doing awesome! All the pups are up over a pound now. Maggie is taking a little more time throughout the day to visit with the family. She has been wanting to get inside the warming box a few times now, and until today I guess she figured she wouldn' fit. She would stand in the box, dig around, sign and get out again. So today, she must have thought, to hell with it and actually tried to lay down in it!

2 pups are starting to open an eye, and they have that wonderful puppy breath we all love ( but can't really say why...) and still look like a bunch of passed out drunks!

I'll post more pictures later tonight!

2 Days Old

And now, a word from our sponsers...

I think I'm going to suggest a new x-ray machine to the vet. First, he says he saw 6 for sure, maybe 7. I called Friday morning to let him know Maggie was showing signs of whelping. He tells me after he looked at the x-rays again ( the x-rays were a bit drier then) he could see 7 for sure, maybe 8.

Yeah, ummmm...hello, 11, she had 11!!!

She started panting heavily and digging around 3am Friday morning. I sat up with her until 5am, nothing really went any further, so I decided to get a bit more sleep. At 7 am I woke, checked her & she was still panting & digging, no drop in temperature...so I got my boys up for school, breakfast made, lunches packed and sent them off to school.

The rest of my day was 100% devotion to Maggie. I had Mom getting the boys from school & supper was taken care of for me. I had everyone in the house on standby, I was busy...if they couldn't get it for themselves, ask another adult! I sat/layed either IN or beside the whelping box (thank god I made it big enough for BOTH of us to lay in!!) from 9am Friday morning until the last pup was born.

Her first contraction came at 12:20am Saturday morning. By 1:00am, the first pup was out, a girl who weighed 12.10 oz. At 2:51am, the second pup was out, another girl weighing a whopping 13.80 oz. The third was out at 3:11am, a boy weighing 9.95 oz. The fourth was another boy born at 3:36am, he weighed 10.30 oz. The fifth was so fast, I don't think she even contracted for him. He was born at 3:37am and weighed 7.95 oz (our runt). Maggie then seemed to take a break. I called the vet around 5am, and he said if she wasn't staining to push, give her a little while longer. By 7am she had started to push again, hard. I was just going out to turn the car on & warm it up when I was called back into the room, she was delivering on her own!

Sadly, the sixth pup was still born, he was born at 8am and weighed 10.30 oz. Number seven was another boy, born at 8:34am and weighed in at 11.70 oz. At 8:48am, we had boy number six born weighting 10.35oz, the eigth puppy. The nineth pup was out at 9:03am and weighed 10.20 oz, another boy. Our second still born was another boy born at 10:35am weighing 11.05 oz. Our last pup was born at 10:40am, this little girl weighed 12.10 oz.

Maggie and her babies are all doing good. At first, I kept the pups in a warming box inside the whelping box (I was scared Maggie might step on one)and kept two - three with her most of the time. I had to move all of them in with her as she became too concerned and would try to get into the warming box with the others! She was very very content once all were with her and finally slept soundly, snoring as loud as ever. With all of them being in my bedroom, I can hear every little peep from my kitchen so I can get some things done. I'm very lucky to have many extra helpers should I need to leave the house. Everyone seems to want to sit and watch them! Maggie doesn't seem to mind at all with extra people in the room, they are all people she lives with and knows well anyways.

The pups had all gained at least 1 oz in the first 24 hours. By day 2, our biggest pup weighed 1 lb 1.50oz! She is a tank, and talk about strong!!! I make sure our little guy always gets on first and doesn't get bullied off the teat by the others.

I was sitting, watching them feed last night. You could sit & watch them for hours (although they don't really DO anything) and just be captivated. In a funny way, the pups look like a bunch of drunks who have one too many and passed out where they lay.

We're gonna have.....

SIX!!!

Everything looks good...one pup is in the breach postion, but could turn and pups are sometimes born that way anyways.  They are good in size which should cause no problems.  There may be 7, as one could have been hiding behind her very swollen mammary glands or possibly behind another pup...but the count is 6 for sure!!!  Now we wait for her temperature to drop to indicate whelping is begining!!!

Day 53

She looks so uncomfortable.  2 days until x-rays & 10 days until her due date!!  I have a feeling she may go on Tuesday (the 26th).  I'm pretty sure I can feel 2 on the left side & 1 on the right....I mean I KNOW I can feel them, but how many I can feel is what I'm pretty sure of.....

Ok, I'm done.......

WAITING!!!

5 sleeps untill we know how many, 13 (give or take) sleeps until they are here!  Sent the registration papers off to the International Olde English Bulldogge Association today, snuggled with my baby in her box,  researched some more, bought some more supplies, snuggled some more....and I'll probably snuggle more before the night is out.

Day 49

She eats, sleeps, wakes up, moves to a new to place and goes back to sleep.

This is the "I'm so not impressed" look.

Last night while Maggie was sleeping on my bed, I could SEE and FEEL the puppies moving!!  Woke the hubby up (after a long day of ice fishing) to tell him....got a not very heartfelt "yay" out of him.  Well, I was excited!!

HandyWoman-MacGyver style

When I first decided to take on breeding, of course I researched what I was in for.  I knew I'd need a whelping box for Maggie to deliver & rear the pups in.  I gave up on the people who said they'd make one for me & made my own...MacGyver style.

My first idea was to have a box made & put it in my basement near the fireplace.  She'd have warmth & privacy.  Then I got to thinking that she'd no doubt try to give birth IN MY BED, as she sleeps there every night.  So the next idea was to put a kiddie pool beside my bed just for her to birth in & then move her & the pups down to the basement.  More thinking....that wasn't going to work as I have to be able to ref the fights my kids have over the xbox, and being downstairs most of the time wouldn't allow me to cook, clean, REF etc.... so keep her in MY room, beside my bed the whole time seemed a much better solution to my problem.  My other problem is still in the works of being fixed...I need to keep my boy dogs out of the room (they sleep there all day & night!).  I need to find someone to take my Great Dane,Ozzy for at least a few days...the little dog can stay in my sons room...but 1 problem at a time...

Anyways, I've come to realize....she's way too big for the kiddie pool (it's ok for just sleeping in...not to birth in !)...now I have to make a whelping box.  Buying one was out of the question...too expensive.  Asking someone to make me one...too unrelieable.  As with all things, I'd have to do it myself!  After more thinking, I was almost going to go with a cardboard option, but too unsanitary.

Now, I have an old TV unit that we don't use & the boys have seemed to wreck.  Wheels turning....if I cut the bottom portion off & left the area where the TV & stereo sat, that would make a perfect size area!!  So after the hubby gave the ok the use it, I went to work.  All I had to cut it with was a hand saw, which was ok because the stand is made out of chipboard anyway...very very easy to cut.  The problem was...the crappy old hand saw I had had a nic at the top...so I could only saw half way before the saw would get stuck!  Another problem...American Idol was on (1st show) & I wanted to watch it.  Solution:  work on box during commercials!!  Did I mention just how smrt I am??   : D

Finished all  I could last night, I'd run out of things ( I did recycle all the screws and brackets I could though...yay for me & my enviromental/economic thoughtfulness!).  So this morning after dropping off the kids at school, I went to see how much a sheet of chipboard would cost me & if Home Hardware would cut it for me....$8.00 later I walked out with my sheet cut & a bag of nails.  Now all I need to get is that sticky paper used to line drawers and shelves for the bottom, make a doorway (I'll be using the cupboard doors as they already have hinges on them...more saving $), and seal the edges with silicone & I'll be all set.

I've always told my boys...if you see your Dad doing something for me....it's not because I CAN'T do it...it's because I don't WANT to do it.

I should have taken pictures of the before...I'll post after pictures when it's done.

Head shakes

So I talked to the vet today, and he agrees with my feeling that the head shakes ARE a result of low blood sugar.  9 days to go until we know how many!

Ozzy has decided he likes the kiddie pool I set up for Maggie to whelp in....

what a monkey!

Fat Momma...day 45

Well , we are about 18 days away from the BIG DAY!  I can't wait and I'm sure after the trama of little crying things are explelled for her body, Maggie can't wait either!  In 10 days we will know how many wittle babies we are having...can't wait for that either!!

Maggie has been having head shakes and after a little researching, the reason could be low blood sugar or low calcium.  There were a few remidies, giving her a cookie, honey, corn syrup ect, but a tsp of sugar in about 5-6 tbs of water seems to stop them immediately!  I've been taking her temperature ( to get her used to the "YOINK"! intrusion at her backdoor) and there has been no increase to warn of illness.  I'll be calling the vet tomorrow (monday) to just inform him of the shakes, what Ive tried and what seems to be working and take it from whatever he says.

Did I mention how EXCITIED I am????
